"One Of The Most Original And Stunning Bodies Of Work Now Being Made For The Movies." -The Boston Phoenix
Here, collected in one volume for the first time, are ten exquisite stop-motion animation masterpieces by the Brothers Quay made from 1984 through 1993. These extraordinary shorts have never been available on DVD.
Boundlessly inventive, the Quays have created some of the most visually stunning animation ever seen. Identical twins born in Pennsylvania, the Quays reside in London in publicity-shy seclusion, making their innovative films under the aegis of Koninck Studios. With their passion for detail, their breathtaking command of color and texture, and their astonishing use of focus and camera movement, they turn their miniature sets into unforgettable world, suggestive of Kafkaesque nightmares of menace and decay, or the landscapes of long-repressed childhood dreams.
In The Brothers Quay Collection are ten short films, including cult favorites such as The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer, the Quays' tribute to the great surrealist Czech animator; Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies, a ravishing black and white fugue of musical bars and bouncing balls; Anamorphosis, in which the Quays mischievously reveal hidden symbols in old paintings the gorgeous, haunting dreamscapes of The Comb, and their masterpiece; Street of Crocodiles, in which a nightmarish netherworld comes alive inside a deserted museum. The collection also includes two unique pop promos made by the Quays for the group His Name is Alive, plus the rarely seen one-minute Dramolet.
